ALBERT LIVES WITH HER MOTHER IN THE HOUSE AT THE END OF THE TOWN. A CHILDHOOD SMEARED OF TRAGIC EVENTS SCAR THE POOR BOY THAT DECIDES TO LOCK HIMSELF IN THE BASEMENT BELOW THE STAIRS. THE LAST FLIGHT INTO HIS PAST, WILL TRANSFORM ALBERT IN A CONSCIOUS AND THEREFORE A VERY DANGEROUS MAN…

I’VE ALWAYS FOUND MORE FASCINATING TO WORK WITH UNANIMATED OBJECTS THAN WITH REAL ACTORS. GIVING LIFE TO SOMETHING NOT ALIVE, OR THAT WAS ALIVE BEFORE, THROUGH STOP MOTION IS DEFINITELY VERY FULFILLING. AS A DIRECTOR I’VE ALWAYS KNOWN THAT THIS WAY OF THINKING MIGHT BE A QUALITY BUT ALSO REPRESENT A LIMIT: IT WAS IN THIS TINY GAP THAT THE IDEA OF “ADAM AND EVE RAISED CAIN” CAME TO LIFE. SINCE ITS CONCEPTION, I KNEW THAT IT WOULD HAVE TAKEN NEARLY 4 YEARS OF WORK AND OF MY LIFE: AND IT HAPPENED. EVEN IF THE CONTAINER WAS A SMALL “BOX” OF 20 MINUTES AND THE “WALLS” WERE MADE OF ROUGH WOOD, I WAS ABLE TO FILL IT WITH MULTIPLE IDEAS, REFLECTIONS, PASSION AND ALSO VISUAL EXPEDIENTS THAT I WOULDN’T EVEN HAVE THOUGHT AT THE BEGINNING. “MADNESS” AND “PHOBIAS”, GRUDGE AND VENGEANCE, THE GUILT OF FATHERS THAT LAY UPON THEIR CHILDREN, THE IDEA OF MINIATURE INSIDE ANOTHER MINIATURE, IRONY AND SADISM, THE “MONSTERS” AND THE LOVE FOR MONSTERS MOVIE, THE COUNTRY LIKE ATMOSPHERE AND THE 50’S SCI-FI MOVIES: THEMES THAT MAY SEEM FAR AWAY FROM EACH OTHER BUT THAT I HAVE INSERTED IN THE STORY BECAUSE SOURCE OF INSPIRATION AND AT THE SAME TIME INTERESTING AND STIMULATING MATERIAL FOR A FILMMAKER. LATEX PUPPETS WITH ACTOR’S “LIVING” EYES: A DICHOTOMY THAT HAS REPRESENTED A BIG CHALLENGE REALIZATION WISE BUT ALSO A GREAT CREATIVE GRATIFICATION. TO DONATE REAL EYES TO THE PUPPETS WAS LIKE GIVING THEM A SOUL, FILLING THE GAP BETWEEN “THING” AND “BEING”, HAVING THE RARE OPPORTUNITY TO ANIMATE PUPPETS TRYING TO BRING THEM TO LIFE THROUGH STOP MOTION, AND TRANSFORMING ACTORS INTO PUPPETS. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE PRODUCTION, ONE OF THE MOST RECURRENT INDICATION THAT I USED TO DESCRIBE IMMEDIATELY THE STYLE THAT I WANTED TO ACHIEVE WAS: “LIKE IF ROB ZOMBIE WAS TO MAKE A STOP MOTION MOVIE SOME DAY!”. WHAT I REALLY WANTED TO DESCRIBE WAS IN FACT A RUDE, EVIL, BITING AND SOMETIMES REPULSIVE STYLE, THAT HAD TO BE RECOGNIZED IN EVERY ASPECT OF THE REALIZATION: THE DESIGN AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SETS, CINEMATOGRAPHY, CONCEPTUAL DESIGN AND THE MAKING OF THE PUPPETS; ALL ASPECTS THAT FOR THE COMMON WAY OF THINKING ABOUT STOP MOTION ARE DIFFICULT TO COMBINE, BUT THAT IN THE “WORLD OF OPPOSITES AND EXTREMES” OF “ADAM AND EVE RAISED CAIN”, ACCORDING TO ME, FIND THE RIGHT BALANCE.
